Congregation in Virginia distributes 40,000 pounds of sweet potatoes in Virginia ...click to open/close

A Church of the Nazarene in Virginia distributed 40,000 pounds of sweet potatoes to the hungry in their area. Forty thousand pounds is 20 tons of potatoes! According to the Mission Match application materials from the congregation, the church planned on "working through various Life Groups of the church. Men, women and children will come together for a day of 'bagging' potatoes that will be used to stock the local church food pantry, be donated to area and regional food banks and be contributed to other ministries who are feeding the hungry." According to the church's Mission Match application, the congregation raised funds to "pay for the truck, driver and fuel to deliver the potatoes." According to additional materials from the church, approximately 100 volunteers were needed to bag the potatoes when received at the church. Comments in these materials indicated, "It's hard to believe that hunger is a problem in the United States, but there is a solution…food! … saving fresh produce that would otherwise go to waste! … getting the food on the tables of those who need it most. … fighting against hunger in America."
